Madder Cutch & Co
Madder Cutch & Co create beautifully designed fabrics that are printed using sustainably sourced plant dyes and pigments. Their original designs are hand screen-printed on 100% linen that is woven in the UK.
Founder, Nicola Cliffe, is a former chemistry teacher with a lifelong love of textiles. She left the classroom to follow a childhood dream of going to art college. Triggered by a strong desire to redress the careless use of synthetic dyes worldwide, she completed an MA with distinction in sustainable textile design at Chelsea College of Art and Design. Taking inspiration from her surroundings and her love of drawing, Nicola turns her sketches into flowing repeats and screen-prints them by hand in her garden studio.
Made from plant extracts woad, madder, cutch, weld and pigments such as charcoal use the latest, most environmentally friendly methods, to show off her colours at their beautiful best. These colours have been used since antiquity and have been inspired by Nicola’s home surroundings of Stamford, Lincolnshire – a beautiful Georgian town where she lives and has her studio.
